- Announcement: Next generation dictionary definition language: COMCIFS has
been considering a "next generation" DDL for use with future crystallographic CIF definitions.
The brief for the development group was that a new DDL should, at a minimum: meet the attribute
capabilities of existing DDLs; increase the semantic richness and precision in definitions;
and provide mechanisms to enable common data definitions to be shared across domain-specific
dictionaries. The draft proposal, called DDLm to reflect the inclusion of methods attributes
for relating defined items, has been presented to COMCIFS for review, and is opened to the
crystallographic community for inspection and comment. Details of DDLm are available
here. An expanded
briefing note appears on the cif-developers archive
here.

- Announcement
A fourth blind test of crystal structure prediction is being organised to evaluate current methodologies in ab initio crystal structure prediction. Previous such blind tests (the latest was published in Acta Cryst B, 2005, vol 61, 511-527) have been a valuable exercise in gauging the reliability of computational methods. The upcoming blind test, whose "targets" will be announced mid-January 2007 and will run until July 2007, is open to participation from any research group involved in developing new methods for crystal structure prediction. Anyone interested in participating should contact Graeme Day (University of Cambridge) for details.
