Dear Sir,
Enclosed is our updated list of vacancies (see below). We would be grateful
if you would make this information available to members of your staff and
others who might be interested via your normal internal procedure. All our
vacancies can also be found on our web-site http://www.esrf.fr.

REF. PDID27-1
The ESRF is a multinational research institute, situated in Grenoble,
France and financed by 18 countries mostly European. It operates a powerful
synchrotron X-ray source with some 30 beamlines (instruments) covering a
wide range of scientific research in fields such as biology and medicine,
chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, materials and surface science,
and physics. Research at the ESRF is carried out by several thousand
external users each year from universities, public research laboratories
and industry, and by the ESRF's own scientists. The ESRF employs about
600staff and is organized as a French société civile. The working language
of the ESRF is English.
The Experiments Division designs, constructs and runs the ESRF experimental
stations (= beamlines). Within this division the Materials science group is
now seeking to recruit:
2 Post-doctoral fellows (m/f)
for the high pressure beamline ID27
THE FUNCTION:
ID27 is a premier X-ray powder and single crystal diffraction station
primarily dedicated to research at extreme pressures and temperatures. The
combination of high resolution XRD and advanced sample environments
(Paris-Edinburgh large volume press and double sided laser heated diamond
anvil cells) open up many new possibilities in the studies of matter at
very high pressures and temperatures. You will help with the operation of
the beamline, your main responsibility, though, will be to continue and
improve the high-pressure high-temperature program mainly in the domain of
materials science. User support will be a key activity, which will provide
much opportunity for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field.
Beamtime will be set aside for in-house research and you will be given the
opportunity to develop your own research programme.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
First degree and Ph.D. in physics, geophysics or materials science. You
will be expected to have already conducted and published a significant
amount of research work. Experience with high-pressure techniques and good
experimental skills are essential. Synchrotron radiation experience, more
particularly in diffraction techniques, is also very desirable.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The ESRF shares a site with several other major European scientific
institutes; it offers an exciting opportunity in an international
atmosphere. Installation allowances will be given to new staff coming from
outside the Grenoble area, and an expatriation allowance can be given
according to specific internal regulations. Only candidates holding a Ph.D.
obtained less than 3 years ago are eligible for Post-doctoral positions.
Post-doctoral fellows are employed for an eighteen-month period with a
possibility of extension to another six to eighteen months and the contract
should start as soon as possible. Further information on the post can be
obtained from Mohamed MEZOUAR (<email:mezouar...@esrf.fr>email:mezouar...@esrf.fr).
If you are interested, please send us a fax (+33 (0)4 76 88 24 60) or an
e-mail (<mailto:recruitm...@esrf.fr>recruitm...@esrf.fr) with your address, and
we will provide you with an application form. Or print out an application
form on the World Wide Web http://www.esrf.fr/. In addition to the
application form, you should provide us with a detailed CV and the names of
two referees.
Deadline for returning the application forms: 01 September 2006
Applications received after the deadline may be considered for the selected
vacancy if not filled or for future similar positions.

now seeking to recruit a:
Post-doctoral fellow (m/f)
For the High Pressure beamline ID9A
THE FUNCTION:
ID9A is one of the most advanced beamlines for structural investigations at
high pressures nowadays. A well-equipped sample preparation laboratory, a
Raman system and facilities for low and high temperature measurements and
for laser annealing are available. Research is focused on the accurate
determination of structural parameters at high pressures using
angle-dispersive diffraction with area detectors. As a Post-doctoral
fellow, you will participate in research programs, the operation of the
instruments and activities involving external users. You will join in the
effort of the group to upgrade the performance of the experimental
end-station. You will also be encouraged to develop your own research
programs, which should exploit the unique beamline capabilities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
You should hold a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or a related subject. You
should be a good experimental scientist with experience in X-ray
diffraction and high-pressure experiments using diamond anvil cells.
Experience in crystallography and with synchrotron radiation is desirable.
