[sdpd] Software Patents directive rejected by EU Parliament

	Dear all,

Today the software patent directive has been rejected by the EU Parliament,
with a large majority. You can read more information about this on:
http://www.ffii.org/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/technology/4655955.stm
...

The last few days have seen a very strange evolution in the EU Parliament.
A lot of momentum gathered behind the cross-partisan "Buzek-Rocard-Duff"
amendments, which would exclude "pure software" and algorithms. This was
probably not enough to pass these amendments, but close enough to frighten
the pro-software patents.
In the end, most MEPs voted against the directive, either because they were
against it, or because they were afraid of restrictive amendments from the
parliament...

This is not the end of the struglle though. It is unlikely that a new
directive will proposed soon, but pro-software patent will probably try to
make changes directly at the national level in all member countries...

	Cheers,
		Vincent
