This might be news to some (who might be considering compiling
code on PC - but don't think they can afford compilers to be
trying this out) - but not to others.
There are now a range of GNU based C and Fortran 77 compilers for
PC/Windows or DOS that install "straight of the box" as binaries.
In the MS-Windows case, these allow the creation of native Windows
executables.
While many of these are described in the CCP14 "Resources/Databases for
Developers" webpage at: http://www.ccp14.ac.uk/recomm/index.html,
people may not realise how easy many of the programs are to install -
even compared to commercial compilers. Thus there is now a
new "Installing Free C/Fortran Compilers" section on the CCP14
