The Nature of Questions

The most recent and very honest question posted by a graduate student from
Alfred University (..preferred orientation and GSAS...) constitutes a perfect
example while answers should be forwarded to the questioner only (Mr. Hewat's
position). If all subscribers get bombarded with answers addressing the very
basics of crystallography and powder diffractometry then this forum will
become unattractive very soon. There is double work: the deletion of
questions and all their answers.

I think it would be unfortunate to allow this forum to be (ab)used as a
substitute for independent thinking and problem solving. For trying to get a
quick fix by picking brains around the globe, a Rietveld newsgroup will be
more appropriate. Maybe the goals and purpose of this forum should be
clearly stated again. Then its clients can decide what should be the
question "threshold" and what are the best ways to communicate efficiently.
